Puppy Updates

Dune went for a trip to the Island and got to hang out with her Little niece.
She was great!
Ares came for a visit and Clover was stoked!!!!
He is very cute, super rambunctious, and totally darling.
Look at that little face!
Nugget is home!!! Having a little spoon session with mom Clover!

Sunni came by on Saturday, it was hard to get them to all sit still for a moment!
Clover loves Sunni, and Nugget likes her until she has a treat, then they are mortal enemies!

Dinner Ideas

Lincoln (Moose) is a spoilt boy...
Just got this note from Leah and thought I would pass it along..........

We wanted to let you know we have been making our own dog food! After doing a lot of research, we have settled on this recipe. It makes about 24 cups of food, which we portion and store in the freezer:

  • 4 lbs ground turkey
  • 4 lbs ground beef
  • 1 lb or so of chicken livers
  • 1 lb or so of chicken hearts
  • 6 hard boiled eggs
  • 2 zucchinis, juiced
  • 2 yams, juiced

Directions:
  1. Blitz the eggs in a food processor (with shells)
  2. Blitz livers and heart in food processor
  3. Juice the zucchinis and yams, mix pulp and juice together
  4. Add everything to a very large stand mixer, or bowl and mix together thoroughly
  5. Portion in 1-2 cup servings and freeze.
  6. Thaw 1-2 at a time, and add digestive enzyme powder and salmon oil before serving.

We have been feeding Lincoln:

Chicken necks for breakfast
The homemade food for lunch
The homemade food plus green tripe for dinner.

On occasion he also has: bananas, turkey neck, raw buffalo bones, apples, yogurt, canned pumpkin.

yummmmmm...sound good....kinda!

Clover and I are in Puppy Withdrawl

Jersey has gone home, Nugget is in White Rock with a broken nail...its so quiet around here, Clover and I are in Puppy Withdrawl.
Clover is so sad she even resorted to major couch snuggling with me, as she crawled onto my lap and went to sleep...Clover NEVER snuggles like that!  Don't get me wrong, I'll take her snuggles anytime!  So while she laid on my lap, I of course didn't dare move incase I would wake her and she would take off...So instead, I texted the puppy owners asking for pictures to help get Clover and I thru the lonely days!

Got this one of Lincoln a couple days ago...He just looks like a little trouble maker!
Dune has had her shots and now gets to go to the park, where she is behaving excellently!!  But holy shit, when did she get so big?
Oh the good times, when Jersey was here, hanging with mom on the trampoline!
Rufus came for a visit on Monday, we ran him rugged and sent him home nice and tired!!
Dune stopped by again this weekend and had a good play with Clover and Frisco

Remember Pennylane from Litter #1?  I got these new pics, and had to share....she is adorable!

Nash Says Thanks!

Got this email last night and wanted to share it, cause I know you all will be as stoked as I am that we were able to help!

Hi Atlin,

Thank you for the generous donation! As a volunteer-run rescue we rely on donations from the community to take dogs out of the shelter system, provide them with vet care and training, and support them through their foster period.

Your donation will make a difference in the life of a dog like Nash. He had a bad case of kennel cough coming out of the shelter and has needed a little extra TLC on top of his neuter, vaccinations and other typical costs associated with rescue. He's recovering nicely and loves to play with his foster sister while awaiting his forever home.

Nash is a staffy bull cross so I thought you might enjoy his smiling face! :)

Thank you again!

April

I do enjoy his smiling face!!!  And I am smiling too, knowing that TuffLove Kennels was able to help.
If you know anyone looking to adopt, please pass on the HugABull info...maybe we could help get Nash into a good home!

Dog Mania Around Here

Generations of Staffys.

Babysitting Jersey, and Sunni came by for a visit.
Had to get a family photo
Jersey is a good looking girl

Sunni looks just like Clover, just a little bit shorter, but filling out and looking great
Rufus came for a visit and played with Jersey
Nugget came home for a visit too.  She is on bed rest after breaking her toe nail, she has been quarantined in White Rock!
How the hell did we manage to get this photo?  Treats, lots of treats!
Taking a break from the dojo for a 'homemade chicken liver brownie'!

Vaccinations / Over-Vaccinations

Poor Luna's ear fell off...from over vaccination.
This is my friends dog, she is a very sweet little thing.  But should be all black and have both ears!  Unfortunately, she was over vaccinated as a pup...she lost patched of hair that grew back white, and her ear turned into a scab and fell off!  Holy Shit, are you serious?

It is time for 12 week vaccinations!  Have you done your research?  Our vet recommends a booster of Parvo and Distemper.  NO RABIES, NO KENNEL COUGH

KENNEL COUGH is recommended (and sometimes mandatory) for boarding or doggy day care.  Get this vaccination when it is necessary.
RABIES isn't necessary in the city, and is really tough on their little systems.  If you cross the boarder with your pup, you will have to get the vaccine because it is a requirement for taking your dog to the USA.  But our vet doesn't do Rabies Vaccines until the pup is 16 weeks.

There are many horror stories of over vaccination.  A mastiff in our neighbourhood was paralyzed for 6 months, and now barley walks and is unsocialized because she was an injured dog the beginning of her life.  Please ask questions and be educated about vaccinations.  I don't meant to scare anyone but it is a serious issue!

HUGABULL Donation

Thank you to Lincoln, Rufus, Dune, Jersey and Ares for their generous donation to HugABull.

HugABull is a registered non-profit organization and a community of pit bull owners, advocates and enthusiasts. Our mission is to rescue dogs, provide public education, and build a community of responsible pit bull owners and supporters.

A $500 cheque was put in the mail today and I will post any further information we receive from this amazing organization.

TuffLove Kennels is happy to support HugABull's continued advocacy to bully breeds and rescued dogs.

Check out their Website and see what good they are doing!

Pet Insurance

What about it?  I don't know much, I don't have any, and I wonder if it is good or not?
BUT in the last 2 weeks Nugget has costs me $1200.
First, she ran face first into Clover and broke her canine tooth, had to get a half root canal...over $600. Then 2 weeks later, I noticed her lifting her back paw, it had been a couple of days and her back toe nail was broken and swollen.  Poor thing, had to be sedated and have her nail cut off and cleaned, had to be done immediately (because of infection risk)...another $600.
Luckily I had the cash to cover the expenses, but the Vet cost ALOT!  And you will pay anything, cause you LOVE them!!!!
I have heard good things and bad things about insurance, so do some research and see what you think.  I just want to put it on the table, cause it will be something that you will want to talk to your vet about.

The owners of Jersey have researched and are going with the highly recommended...

And I was recently recommended PetSecure by a vet office that sees claims all the time, they said that it seems to pay out the easiest, and that most people have been pleased with its services.

Talk to your vet, get information!
AND REMEMBER TO BOOK YOUR 12 WEEK VET APPOINTMENT

Food for thought

The Raw Food thing seems very complicated at first, being unsure of what they can eat, how much, when, and if they are getting the proper nutrition for their growing bodies.  I think the answer is a well rounded diet, and coming up with idea to keep them interested in their food (what? they eat better than we do!!)
There are some great books on feeding raw (and of course information online http://www.barfworld.com/html/barf_diet/barfdiet_specific.shtml), with information on essential vitamins and minerals (which will give you confidence in proper nutrition), as well as some recipes if you want to spice it up for your already spoilt dog!  I definitely recommend doing research to make sure all your bases are covered.
Your pups will also be getting a lot of treats right now as you bate them in their training.  Try to make sure you are giving them the healthiest treats, cause they are getting so many of them.

The Homemade Liver Brownies I sent you home with, can also be bought in store, but for a fraction of the price you can make them at home.  Here's how...

Cut up or puree liver (I use chicken, but use any type) (4 lbs)
Wheat germ (1/2 c)
Millet flour (or buckwheat flour) (3/4 c)
Eggs (4)
Blackstrap mollases or honey (generous squeeze)
and if you can think of anything else, throw it in!
Line your cooking tray with parchement paper and bake @ 350 for 45 mins to an hour...until they look cooked like a cake.
Cool, cut into pieces and put in ziplock bags to freeze.

In the mean time, here is what I heard back from you about what your pups are eating...

Dune (Olive):
gizzards, chicken hearts, chicken wings (cut in half), steamed kale and carrots, this week she's eaten a bit of pork, all her meals are coated in salmon oil and bonemeal. and at least once a day we put kefir in with her food, we still give her a bit of goat milk, but she's happy with water now

Lincoln (Moose):
He loves chicken necks!  Im going on a hunt to find some hearts and other organ meat to give him every few days. Haven't tried the tripe yet... still a little nervous of the smell, BUT it is thawing out in the fridge right now. EEK! hehe. He sure loves his goat milk

Jersey:
Right now J is on Red Dog Blue Cat raw food mixing between chicken, beef, salmon, bison, turkey, lamb for now. As those are fairly well balanced no additional fruit / veg yet but will be trying that's as she gets older. So far she likes everything pretty well.
Suppliments we are using are:
- Biologic Vet Bio FATS oil
- Biologic Vet BioVites (multi vitamin)
- Juka Organics Flax Action (balancing with oil as they share some common elements so don't want to overdo the Omega 3,6,9)
Treats are patented Tuff Luv Liver Treats - she loves those more than any others we have tried so happy to make those up in batches for her.
She also gets chicken wings or some duck neck as 1 out of the 4 meals on days she's not eating poultry that has bone already in it to keep her daily calcium intake on track.

Hope this helps!!
