The Raw Food thing seems very complicated at first, being unsure of what they can eat, how much, when, and if they are getting the proper nutrition for their growing bodies. I think the answer is a well rounded diet, and coming up with idea to keep them interested in their food (what? they eat better than we do!!)
There are some great books on feeding raw (and of course information online
http://www.barfworld.com/html/barf_diet/barfdiet_specific.shtml), with information on essential vitamins and minerals (which will give you confidence in proper nutrition), as well as some recipes if you want to spice it up for your already spoilt dog! I definitely recommend doing research to make sure all your bases are covered.
Your pups will also be getting a lot of treats right now as you bate them in their training. Try to make sure you are giving them the healthiest treats, cause they are getting so many of them.
The
Homemade Liver Brownies I sent you home with, can also be bought in store, but for a fraction of the price you can make them at home. Here's how...
Cut up or puree liver (I use chicken, but use any type) (4 lbs)
Wheat germ (1/2 c)
Millet flour (or buckwheat flour) (3/4 c)
Eggs (4)
Blackstrap mollases or honey (generous squeeze)
and if you can think of anything else, throw it in!
Line your cooking tray with parchement paper and bake @ 350 for 45 mins to an hour...until they look cooked like a cake.
Cool, cut into pieces and put in ziplock bags to freeze.
In the mean time, here is what I heard back from you about what your pups are eating...
Dune (Olive):
gizzards, chicken hearts, chicken wings (cut in half), steamed kale and carrots, this week she's eaten a bit of pork, all her meals are coated in salmon oil and bonemeal. and at least once a day we put kefir in with her food, we still give her a bit of goat milk, but she's happy with water now
Lincoln (Moose):
He loves chicken necks! Im going on a hunt to find some hearts and other organ meat to give him every few days. Haven't tried the tripe yet... still a little nervous of the smell, BUT it is thawing out in the fridge right now. EEK! hehe. He sure loves his goat milk
Jersey:
Right now J is on Red Dog Blue Cat raw food mixing between chicken, beef, salmon, bison, turkey, lamb for now. As those are fairly well balanced no additional fruit / veg yet but will be trying that's as she gets older. So far she likes everything pretty well.
Suppliments we are using are:
- Biologic Vet Bio FATS oil
- Biologic Vet BioVites (multi vitamin)
- Juka Organics Flax Action (balancing with oil as they share some common elements so don't want to overdo the Omega 3,6,9)
Treats are patented Tuff Luv Liver Treats - she loves those more than any others we have tried so happy to make those up in batches for her.
She also gets chicken wings or some duck neck as 1 out of the 4 meals on days she's not eating poultry that has bone already in it to keep her daily calcium intake on track.
Hope this helps!!
